This section is confusing for me. I understand how these questions can be answered to kinda give a "right answer", but I am failing to understand the expected behavior when I inevitably change the "rate of return" for taxable accounts via one of the many methods.
The qualified dividends paid in my taxable account is roughly 1% annually . So I answered this question "Growth Taxed as Qualified Dividends" = 20%. Since my first entered "rate of return"=5% for my taxable account...this gives me a dividend calculation of 20% of 5% = 1%...which is correctly logged on the balance sheet. In my case I always transfer these to cash.
However, when I change the Overall Growth of this taxable account to 6%...the calculation now seems to be 20% of 6% =~ 1.2% which would be incorrect since the actual dividend rate hasn't changed just because the value of the equities themselves have increased. BUT...the number I see on the balance sheet has definitely increased by "about" 20% (1 > 1.2).
I am new to this but it seems to me that the questions should be more similar to this:
1) What annual percentage of this taxable portfolio is typically paid out in qualified dividends / long term capital gains? typical answer might be 0-5%...this number can be easily obtained from a brokerage account and stays relatively the same year after year for a stable portfolio. I fail to see a correlation to the growth rate of the equities in the taxable account vs dividends.
2) What annual percentage of this taxable portfolio is typically paid out as Interest / Ordinary Income? Same comment as before.
So what what am I missing? Is this the behavior that other see as well, or is this just a setting that I haven't got around to finding yet, haha. I've only had the program for a few days so that is very likely.
@azjohn You're not missing anything and we've come to agree with the points you've made in this post. So, in that regard, we're planning an enhancement and have included it in list on the More > Resources > Feature Voting page. It's already got quite a few votes but you can go there and add your own vote to increase the priority we're placing on it.
Thanks,
Stuart
NEVERMIND: I found it in the tool itself. SORRY, I looked all over the website.
Thanks for the info Stuart...but for the life of me I can't find the voting page, haha. I cannot find a click for the "More" option and my "Resources" header does not have any voting information, only links to "submit problems" for various versions of the software.
If it makes a difference, I subscribed to the Online Version.
@azjohn I think you may be selecting "Resources" from the Pralana website ( https://pralanaretirementcalculator.com/) rather than the Pralana tool ( https://pralana.online/). On the bar at the top of the tool are selections for: Build, Review, Analyze, and More. Then, More > Resources and tab Feature Voting.
