The cost of the excel version is $99. Web version is $119/year.

If I buy the excel verison right now (for $99), how much is the cost to upgrade to the Web version? I hope is is $20?

What are the functions that are available in the excel version that are not available in the Web version?

@pps8888 The cost to upgrade from PRC2024 to the web version will be $40 for the first year, and subsequent annual renewals will be $89.

The functionality of the two tools will essentially be the same, initially, then Pralana Online will diverge with more functionality.

@smatthews51 In which case it makes no financial sense for me to buy the excel version for $99, and then pay $40 for the web upgrade.

might as well just wait and pay $119 for the web.

thannks

@smatthews51 As a user for a few years I am just curious why we would be charged $40 to upgrade to the web version when they are only $20 different? You would think that you would only charge the $20 difference ... especially for your current customers.

@cpackerbacker Well, for our current customers, what we're talking about is the cost of upgrades. Historically, we've charged $49 to upgrade from one model year of Pralana Gold to the next. With Pralana Online, we don't sell it on a model year basis but, rather, on an annual subscription basis. Renewals will be $89. Upgrading from PRC2023 to Pralana Online is $89 for the first year but upgrading from PRC2024 to Pralana Online is $40 for the first year, which is the same effective cost for PRC2023 customers but you have access to PRC2024 until such time as we release Pralana Online.

For new customers (those that were first-time buyers paying the full price of $99 for PRC2024), their total cost to get to Pralana Online is $99 + $40, or $139 as opposed to waiting for Pralana Online to be released and just paying $119 for the first year. It's a $20 higher cost but they have access to PRC2024 for some amount of time before Pralana Online is released, so there's a charge for that.

The only other high-fidelity consumer facing financial planning tool is New Retirement. Pralana is far better, especially now with the expanded capabilities of the Online version. Everything else is crap. Check the price difference between NR and Pralana - it's huge.

Pralana is as good as the "pro" tools I've used as a professional financial planner (MoneyGuide Pro, Right Capital, eMoney) and those cost hundreds of dollars a *month*. It's good to be frugal, but from my perspective, this is an incredible value and we're very fortunate. This is one of those things that, when used correctly saves huge amounts of money over a lifetime.

Nobody tell Stuart now, OK? Our little secret? 🙂

@pps8888 Hi John, it's happening and available now, but they're rolling it out in stages, to the more experienced users first. I think that's a good idea, it allows them to go slow and get it right before unleashing on the masses. Too often these days, software isn't even tested, the paying customers are the "testers" so I appreciate the Pralana team doing things this way.

That said, I've been using it for a while now, through beta and this early release. It's looking good and it's an amazing tool. Just a few nit things being touched up here and there, so I think you'll see it quite soon. Keep an eye on the announcements forum here, I see Stuart just posted something yesterday.

Hi, I purchased Pralana Gold 2024 in May 2024. I'm interested in upgrading to Pralana Online ($40). How long will the $40 discount pricing be available (i.e., does that go away when 2025 version is available)? If I upgrade now, will I need to upgrade license in 2025 for renewal price ($89)? And last question, when does 2025 renewal take place, will that be based on calendar year (i.e., Jan 2025) or on anniversary of when I bought PRC2024 (May). Thanks for clarifying pricing!

@edmoas You will be able to upgrade from PRC2024 to Pralana Online for $40 until March, and thereafter it will be $89 for the first year. Pralana Online is sold as an annual subscription, so the clock on that year begins at the time of your upgrade. The concept of model years (i.e., 2024 or 2025) is not applicable to Pralana Online. It is being updated on a regular basis and you'll have access to all of those updates as long as your subscription is active. So, if you were to upgrade now, you'd notice that it's using 2024 tax rates but in early 2025 it'll start using 2025 tax rates and any other tax law changes applicable in 2025. Does that make sense?
